Description
The leafy stalk of maize produces ears which contain the grain, whose seeds are called kernels. Maize kernels are used in cooking as a starch.
Principla types are dent and flint maize, which may be white, yellow or red (orange) in colour. Used in animal feed and for human consumption as well as for the manufaturer of starch, syrup and sugar. Maize is milled by a wet or dry process to eperate the germ from grain to extract the germ oil.
The quailty specifications are often simple for maximum moisture, foreign matter, damaged and broken grains. Sugar-rich varieties called sweet corn are usually grown for human consumption, while field corn varieties are used for animal feed.
